Westminster Works

Waymarker Plaque

This imposing Edwardian building was orignally a coach and carriage manufactury, run by J A Lawton and Co. However, the works were badly damaged by a fire in 1910 and may have been substantially rebuilt. Westminster Coach WorksThe red brick and elaborately moulded terracotta facade, has been attributed to Phillip H Lockwood, who built it for the Westminster Coach and Motor Car Works in 1913-14. The coach works subsequently became a car show room and part of it was occupied as offices by Chester City Council. During the 1970s it was occupied by Chester Arts and Recreation Trust. In 1984, the facade was retained in the new City Library, designed by Cheshire County Council's Department of Architecture. The building is to become Chester's new Market Hall.
