Bell Tower

In the late 1960s the bell frame in the great central tower of the Cathedral was causing concern.

Rather than strengthen the existing tower, it was decided to build a new, free standing tower adjacent to the City Wall. Work
began in 1973 and was completed in 1975.![]()
The Bell Tower, designed by George Pace, is 85 feet (26m) high, constructed of concrete and faced with sandstone at the base, The upper part is clad in Betheda slate. It is officialy called the Addleshaw Tower after Dean Addleshaw.![]()
Chester's Bell Tower was the first detached bell tower to be built for a cathedral in this country since the Reformation. In its early days it was the subject of much controversy - locally known as the 'Chester Rocket.' ![]()
However, its simple form and excellent use of natural materials have stood the test of time and unlike many other buildings of a similar date, the Bell Tower is now a popular city landmark.
